Located on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, Tortuguero National Park is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the world.
Every year, between July and October, thousands of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) arrive on these beaches after traveling thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean.
But their journey begins much earlier.
After about 60 days buried in the sand, hatchlings emerge and instinctively move toward the ocean. It is a fragile beginning — only 1 in 1,000 will survive to adulthood.
Those that do will spend years navigating the open ocean, guided by Earth's magnetic field, before returning to the exact same beach where they were born.
This extraordinary cycle has been repeated for millions of years.
Why Tortuguero is so important
Tortuguero is not only home to green sea turtles. It is also a nesting site for four species:
- Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas)
- Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
- Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
- Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta)
This makes it one of the most biologically significant turtle habitats in the Americas.

¿Por qué Tortuguero es tan importante?
Tortuguero no solo alberga tortugas verdes. También es sitio de anidación de cuatro especies:

- Tortuga baula
- Tortuga carey
- Tortuga caguama
Esto lo convierte en uno de los ecosistemas más importantes para la conservación de tortugas en América.
